Staff Award for Excellence
The Staff Award for Excellence honors a staff member in the UGA College of Engineering who has demonstrated a strong work ethic, commitment to service and exceptional job performance. This year’s recipient is Amber Juncker, Associate Director of Outreach and Engagement.
Amber Juncker serves a crucial function in managing prospective student outreach events, recruiting future students, and engaging current students with the College of Engineering community. Amber works closely with units across campus, including Undergraduate Admissions and New Student Orientation, to host engineering-focused information sessions, facilities tours, and orientation sessions that ensure that students have a positive experience with the college from the moment they first set foot in Athens.
"Amber is a shining example of what excellence means as a professional in higher education," said Lauren Anglin, Director of Outreach and Engagement. "She is a staunch advocate for our college and programs, a collaborative and innovative colleague, and a source of exceptional support and encouragement for our students."
In addition to providing high-quality customer service to the more than 630 new students attending orientation in summer 2019 and the more than 975 prospective students who visited in fall 2019, Amber has also introduced a number of new initiatives to connect to current and future students. She recently led efforts to offer specialized programming for transfer students during National Transfer Student Week, shining a light on this student population as well as deepening the college’s connection to transfer students. Amber also forged new connections between the College of Engineering and diverse student populations across the state. This year, she represented the College of Engineering during two Atlanta Public Schools Day at UGA events, which allowed her to promote UGA Engineering programs to more than 200 high-achieving students from the Atlanta area.
In addition to her focus on prospective students, Amber makes significant contributions through her work on the Engineering Honors Pathways Program and engineering student organizations. The Engineering Honors Pathways program provides support, incentives and resources for engineering students pursuing honors degrees.
Amber also works closely with Stephan Durham, Assistant Dean for Student Success & Outreach, in supporting student organizations in the College. In this capacity, she initiated procedures to help organizations better promote and communicate information about their meetings and events. She also led efforts to improve the student ambassador program, including the creation of an ambassador handbook that clearly outlines important policies, procedures, events and responsibilities for these important student representatives.
"Her work and contributions to our college are over and beyond what, I believe, we expect of our staff," said Durham. "She is a model co-worker and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work alongside her in the Office of Experiential Programs and Outreach."
