Creating pages in your personal web space
You must meet the following criteria in order to create pages in your personal
web space that will be viewable on the world wide web:
- You must have an account on hoth
- Your home directory is mapped to your L: drive.
- There must be a folder in your home directory named public_html
- Permissions on that directory must be set to 755
- Permissions on files in that directory must be set to 644
- Create your desired pages using the web editor of your choice. (Note: DOIT
only supports Netscape Composer as an editor, therefore we can only answer
questions regarding that editor.)
- When you have finished editing your page, choose File > Save As
and navigate to your L: drive > public_html folder. Save the file as "filename.html"
where filename is something relevant to the content of the document.
For example, if you're creating a list of your publications, publications.html
would be a good choice.
- The page is now in your public_html folder and is available under the URL
http://www.engr.uga.edu/~username/ where "~" (tilde) is the
character on the upper left key on your keyboard and "username"
is the name you use to login to hoth. If you have created a file called publications.html
and your login name is tgill, then that would be available under http://www.engr.uga.edu/~tgill/publications.html
(Hint: if you create a file named index.html, that will be the default
page for the directory; i.e., you don't have to specify that page name in
the browser address.)
- If you browse to that address and receive an access error, you need to change
the permissions on either the file, the public_html directory or both. Click
here for information on changing permissions.
- Finally, notify DOIT with the URL of any pages you wish to link on your
faculty page.
If you have any specific questions, DOIT <support@engr.uga.edu>
will be glad to answer them.
