Description

The environmental physiology lab consists of two environment controlled chambers used for the study of animals. The environment is controlled in terms of temperature, relative humidity, and air speed. Using external equipment, air quality can also be changed.

Projects

This lab is used to test chickens for leg problems that result under certain diets at high air temperatures. The study of the distribution of dust particles in the lungs of animals such as swine and chickens also goes on in this lab.

Other research includes the testing of temperature sensors implanted in chickens to monitor their reaction to different air temperature, humidity, and velocities around them.

The testing of light traps (devices which are used to let ventilation air flow into poultry breeder houses) also occurs here.

Other research groups have used this lab to adapt and manipulate the temperature of food animals and to study the response of blood, bones, and various soft tissues. Diets, movement, and animal husbandry practices are also incorporated into the various environments.
