Description

The center is intended to support state efforts in converting and utilizing industrial, municipal, and agricultural by-products and to foster new industries associated with these materials. The Bioconversion labs located at Driftmier and Whitehall Road serve to promote the research objectives of the center.

Key Program Objectives of the Center:

  1. To develop technology and provide technology-transfer to reduce solid wastes going to landfills, thereby protecting groundwater resources in Georgia.
  2. To enhance the economic viability of rural Georgia by facilitating economic alternatives for waste handling, thereby facilitating retention of existing industries and development of new industry.
  3. To enhance agronomic and horticultural industries by enabling economic nutrient and soil building sources.

Projects

Several faculty, along with others in different departments use the bioconversion lab and research center for research and education in the area of technologies for solid waste and air pollution control. Specific focus is on biological technologies.

The three main activity areas of the center are research, demonstration, and outreach/education. The bioconversion team provides assistance to industry, agriculture, and local government agencies in identifying recoverable organic by-products presently going to landfills, developing technologies to add value to these materials, and ultimately establishing new operations in Georgia. The initial success of the program has been primarily in solid waste composting that has resulted in greater use of low cost, environmentally safe composting, thus reducing landfill reliance and increasing appropriate reuse.
