Description

The Atmospheric Sciences Group in Engineering emphasizes research that increases our understanding of the interactions between the atmosphere and other environmental systems. Our research areas include: agroecosystems (both crop and animal systems), natural resource systems (especially water), hydrometeorology/hydroclimatology, coastal/marine systems, climate variability and extreme events. The Atmospheric Sciences Group operates a 45 station automated environmental monitoring network across Georgia, and UV-B and wet and dry deposition stations, that are part of national networks.

Projects

  1. The Georgia Automated Environmental Monitoring Network (AEMN): A network of 45+ automated weather stations across the state that monitor temperature, relative humidity and other important agricultural and environmental variables continuously. Data and applications are distributed via the web site at http://www.georgiaweather.net.
  2. UV-B Monitoring: A UV-B monitoring station is located at the Bledsoe Research Farm in Pike County, Ga.. This station is part of a national UV-B monitoring network coordinated by Colorado State University and funded by USDA-CSREES.
  3. Wet and Dry Deposition Monitoring: This environmental monitoring station is located at the Bledsoe Research Farm. This station is part of national research support project coordinated by the Illinois Water Survey.
  4. The impact of climate change and climate variability on agricultural production and natural resource use.
  5. Chill-hours and peach production in the southeastern United States.
  6. The impact of hydrometeorology/hydroclimatology on water resources in Georgia.
  7. Heat-stress and mortality in the southern United States.
  8. Wind and solar energy resource assessment in the High Plains of the U.S. and Chile.
  9. State Climatology Office: See www.engr.uga.edu/climate/
  10. Coastal/Marine Meteorology and Climatology
