Description
The alternative fuels and solvents lab is primarily for graduate
and faculty research, and is used as needed for undergraduate student
projects. Research conducted here focuses primarily on the development
of alternative fuel and solvent replacements that are more environmentally
friendly than their traditional counterparts.
Projects
The lab has facilities for differential and gravimetric thermal
analysis studies of vapor pressure, boiling points, and specific
heat measurements. Viscosity, density, and other standard fuel and
solvent properties may be determined in the lab.
Current projects are focused on the development of biodiesel fuels
from renewable farm-grown oils. This includes recycling waste farm-grown
oils as an environmentally friendly diesel fuel. Solvent properties
of renewable oils are being investigated in a search for substitutes
for commercial solvents.
