UGA Athens Campus
Skidaway Institute of Oceanography

The Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is a multidisciplinary research institution located on a 700 acre campus on Skidaway Island, 16 miles southeast of Savannah. Research activities at the Institute are conducted on scales ranging from local economic and environmental issues to global processes and phenomena.

Center for Research and Education at Wormsloe

Located at historic Wormsloe on the Isle of Hope, Georgia, the UGA Center for Research and Education at Wormsloe hosts researchers from the Odum School, the College of Environment and Design, the College of Engineering, and the departments of anthropology, geography and history.

Advanced Imaging Research

Advanced Imaging Laboratory

The Advanced Imaging Lab has facilities for the development of techniques of super-resolution microscopy and adaptive optics for biomedical applications. The lab contains a custom-built microscope with adaptive optics capable of both STORM and Structured Illumination Microscopy. The work of the lab draws upon the UGA NanoSEC Clean Room, the UGA Biomedical Microscopy Core and UGA Animal Facilities.

Biophotonics Laboratory

The Biophotonics Lab is focused on laser-optical imaging and sensing. The lab’s current focus is the characterization of fluorescent environment-sensitive molecular rotors with the long-term goal to provide sensitive fluorescence-based measurement tools for biofluid viscosity and fluid shear stress.

Biophotonics Lab X-Ray Imaging Center

The x-ray imaging center of this lab houses a custom designed ex-vivo volumetric CT scanner for samples up to eight inches in diameter and height, such as agricultural products, soil samples, rock samples, and biological tissue. The CT scanner features dual-energy capability for accurate water content determination or beam-hardening correction.

Bio-Sensing and Instrumentation Laboratory

The Bio-Sensing and Instrumentation Lab is focused on developing innovative sensing and robotics technologies for agriculture and food systems. The lab contains imaging sensors such as shortwave infrared hyperspectral imaging camera, 3-D cameras, thermal camera, and LiDAR. The lab is also well equipped with instruments (such as digital oscilloscope and 3D printer) to develop sensor and robotic prototypes for field based high throughput plant phenotyping.


Biorefining and Carbon Cycling

Biorefining Research and Education Center (BREC)

BREC hosts the Biorefining and Carbon Cycling Program and is host to a wide variety of facilities spread throughout several labs and buildings across the UGA campus.


Bioengineering

Biosynthetic Engineering and Biocatalysis Laboratory

The Biosynteheic Engineering and Biocatalysis Laboratory supports the development of enzymatic and microbial approaches for the production of pharmaceutically important compounds as well as fuels and renewable chemicals.

Comprehensive Molecular Bioengineering Laboratory

The Comprehensive Molecular Bioengineering Lab is equipped to support molecular biology, fermentation and analytical research.

Cellular Bioengineering Laboratory

The Cellular Bioengineering Laboratory is designed to support basic and applied cell-surface interaction research with applications in cell-based biosensors for drug discovery and to support instruction.

Tissue Regeneration Laboratory

The Tissue Regeneration Laboratory is fully equipped for tissue regeneration research. Capabilities include full cell and tissue culture as well as biomaterials processing.

Nano Electrochemistry Laboratory

The NEL has a full complement of state-of-the-art electrochemical, bio-analytical and material characterization tools.

Handa Research Laboratory

The Handa Research Lab includes specialized equipment for material synthesis and characterization.

Locklin Research Laboratory

The Locklin Research Lab includes instrumentation and equipment for discovery and innovation in smart surfaces and interfaces.

Medical Robotics Laboratory

The Medical Robotics Laboratory at the University of Georgia aims to use quantitative engineering analysis to gain a better understanding of the human body and the technologies that we interface with it and to use that understanding to design better therapeutic strategies, devices, and diagnostics. We aspire to serve society by developing new tools to improve human health. As a medical imaging and robotics research group, we focus on enabling technologies for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) guided robotic devices used in patient rehabilitation, surgery and diagnosis.

Biomembrane Engineering Laboratory

The Biomembrane Engineering Lab has equipment that supports development and characterization of biomimicking membranes (both lipid and polymer) and exploration of their application in engineering research.

Integrated Bioscience and Nanotechnology Cleanroom

The Integrated Bioscience and Nanotechnology Cleanroom, a UGA Core facility, is directed and managed by engineering faculty and provides a basic set of additive and subtractive processing and characterization capabilities.

Computational Nano / Bio-Mechanics ​Lab

The Computational Nano / Bio-Mechanics Lab includes computational equipment and software for discovery and innovation in nanomechanics, biomechanics, and multiphase interfaces.


Built Environment

Engineering Design Studio

The Engineering Design Studio provides dedicated computer facilities for rapid prototyping and CNC machining. The shop offers both manual and CNC options for several aspects of woodworking and machining metals and plastics while recently obtaining CNC micro machining capabilities. This lab provides space for students to fabricate and test designs.

Geomaterials Engineering Laboratory

This GMAT Laboratory has facilities to conduct fundamental geotechnical engineering tests including index properties and engineering properties.

STRuctural ENGineering Testing Hub (STRENGTH Lab, Civil Engineering Group)

The STRENGTH Lab provides both structural and material testing capabilities and provides fundamental capabilities for civil engineering students.

Collaborative Lounge for Understanding Society and Technology through Educational Research (CLUSTER)

The engineering education research CLUSTER (Collaborative Lounge for Understanding Society and Technology) is a trans-disciplinary, collaborative group at the University of Georgia that focuses on engineering education research.


Manufacturing Research

Innovation Factory

The Innovation Factory is a fully equipped production facility providing research to redefine advanced manufacturing in the context of stakeholder value creation using Industry 4.0 transformation technologies including AI, data harvesting, VR, and robotics. The Innovation Factory is a sandbox for technology and explorations that provides a unique learning experience for students interested in technology exploration.


Photonics and Electronics Research

Applied Electrostatics Laboratory

The Applied Electrostatics Lab supports a wide range of activities, including: high-voltage / low-current / low-capacitance electronic measurements, steady-state and transient charge measurements, particulate charging by ionized-field and induction processes, fluorometric measurement of ppb tracer concentrations electrostatically deposited onto target surfaces both in the lab and field, charged-spray application of surface decontaminants in microbiological safe-room, devices for electric-discharge-generated ozone for beneficial purposes, photometric assessment and recording of atmospheric ozone concentration, integrated system of fumigation chambers for replicated dose-response analysis of ozone and other ppb-level trace-gas exposures to living plants and other biological systems, lab-scale reactors for synergistic treatment of wastewater by ultraviolet-enhanced ozonation as well as a fully operational trailer-mounted prototype for on-site assessment of the UV-O3 process for treating / recycling real-life waste streams.

Lightwave and Microwave Photonics Laboratory

The Lightwave and Microwave Photonics Lab supports bringing fiber optics and photonics techniques to interdisciplinary areas, by understanding, designing, building a wide range of photonics systems, including: optical hybrid analog / digital processing of signals based on neuromorphic algorithms, wide-bandwidth photonics processor for wireless / microwave system, fiber-optics sensing for biomedical applications, and all-optical signal processing based on (nonlinear) photonics.

Photonic and Electronic Technologies Laboratory

This laboratory focuses on the modeling, design and characterization of photonic and optoelectronic materials, devices, and novel structures.
