Area of Specialty:

Natural resources engineering; Watershed assessment; postharvest

Research:

The overall area of research has been and is related to development of engineering analysis and solutions related with measurement of soil physical properties in the soil-water-plant root continuum and to evaluate applicability of the concepts of nondestructive measurement in selected agricultural systems. -To develop approaches and methods, consistent with climate and available water, for pond designs for developing countries for fish production and water supply.

Service:

To develop bioconversion strategies enabling agricultural wastes and other selected biologically-based materials to be composted and/or converted into alternative products and uses.

To contribute to the development of the discipline of Ecological Engineering through research into appropriate thermodynamic relationships underlying this new discipline.

Instruction:

Courses Currently Taught

ENGR 8520 Advanced heat transfer

ENGR 4210 Linear Systems analysis

ENGR 3440 Water Management

ENGR 3420 Soil Mechanics

My experience has led me the following concepts with an enduring robustness at the upper division and graduate levels.

  • a. To create a professional, one has to provide an environment where students can experience a professional environment.
  • b. It is up to the instructor to articulate a vision for the class in terms of tangible outcomes for students bridging into the world of employment or higher education.
  • c. At the upper division and graduate levels, we do not teach nearly as much as we motivate and maintain motivation.
  • d. Have expectations that will prepare students to equal and exceed employer expectations in a productive work environment.
  • e. Don't lose the really capable students in the mixture at the lowest common denominator.
