Requirements
Successful applications to the BAE department will usually have the following characteristics:

  • GRE Verbal 450 or above
  • Spoken English may be assesed via a telephone interview
  • GRE Quantitative 650 or above
  • GPA 3.0 in a 4 point scale, particularly in engineering-related coursework
  • BS in an engineering discipline, or possibly a science discipline with differential, integral and multivariate calculus plus differential equations and evidence of engineering science coursework. International applications should show evidence of an engineering degree in order to successfully compete for assistantship funding.

The above requirements are approximate and may vary depending on funding availability in particular areas. The evaluation committee looks at the entire application, including references and vision statement in coming to a recommendation decision. The Graduate School makes the final admission decision.

Application Process
In order to assure that your application is processed in a timely manner, follow these guidelines carefully:

  • Contact the Graduate School for an application packet, or apply online.
  • Contact this department's graduate coordinator for an assistantship application or complete it online.
  • Complete and return packets by the appropriate deadlines (listed below).

Complete applications include the following:

  • Official GRE Scores sent direct from the testing service to UGA graduate school
  • Official TOEFL or IELTS Scores where applicable. These test scores are required for international applicants who come from regions where English is not the primary language.
  • Transcipts and proof of graduation for BS and/or MS degrees, sent direct from the school registrar to the UGA graduate school.
  • At least three letters of recommendations, sent by the writer to either the graduate school or the BAE department. Effective references will address previous work and work ethic.
  • Candidates should provide a statement of purpose, addressing vision and goals for coming to graduate school. The statement should provide a consise discussion of how previous experiences lead to the stated vision and goals.
  • Documentation via transcript and/or experience of a strong engineering background, and math preparation.

Financial Information

Application Deadlines
Due to limited course offerings, the department normally considers new students for Fall enrollment only. Students with special circumstances who wish to enroll at another time of the year should contact the graduate coordinator. The following are deadlines provided by the Graduate School.


U.S. Citizens
Applicants may apply to the Graduate School up to one year in advance. The Graduate School will accept domestic applications for admission and supporting documents on the following dates:

  • Fall Semester - July 1
  • Spring Semester - November 15
  • Pre-Summer Semester - April 1
  • Summer Semester (thru session, first and second sessions) - May 1

International Students
Applicants may apply to the Graduate School up to one year in advance. The Graduate School will accept international student applications for admission and supporting documents on the following dates:

  • Fall Semester - May 15
  • Spring Semester - October 15
  • Summer Semester - February 15

International applicants should not apply to the summer session because course offerings are not as extensive as during the fall and spring semesters. Travel and Visa information may be found at http://www.uga.edu/oie/ISSIS/

Applicants who wish to be considered for the Graduate School assistantship competition must be admitted as prospective degree candidates by February 15. Therefore, all general application admission materials must be received in the Office of Graduate Admissions by January 1st.
